Can Deep Strategy Work on a Touchscreen? Mostly, Yes

I used to think serious strategy games needed a mouse. Tideborne Command changed my mind. It's a naval strategy game with real supply management and weather systems, and it plays entirely by touch without feeling cramped.

The trick is good map design. Dragging to set routes and tapping to assign roles is intuitive once the game teaches it well, and clean zooming means you never lose track of the whole picture on a small screen.

Where touch strategy falls apart is precision under pressure — if the game demands twenty inputs in five seconds, glass fails. Tideborne sidesteps this by being slow and deliberate. You plan, then watch it play out.

So the answer isn't 'any strategy game works on a phone.' It's 'strategy games designed around touch and designed around thinking, not clicking fast.' When a studio builds for that, the results are great.
