Turn-Based RPGs Still Belong on Phones
Action RPGs on mobile keep trying to cram console controls onto glass, and it mostly feels bad. Turn-based combat, on the other hand, was practically made for a phone.
You get time to think. You tap your choices. Nothing demands twitch reflexes. Emberfall Saga is my current favorite example — you can set up a careful party plan, execute it one tap at a time, and the whole thing works beautifully in short bursts.
The genre also handles interruptions gracefully. Pause mid-battle, deal with life, come back, resume. No lost progress because a boss attacked while you were ordering lunch.
My one warning is the gacha creep that's crawled into a lot of these games. It's avoidable in the better ones, but keep an eye out. A good turn-based RPG should respect your patience, not your wallet.
